Smalltown boy ha sido mucho más que un exito dance en diferentes épocas de la historia (1984 y posteriores versiones por deejays). Muchas canciones tienen colgada la etiqueta de himno gay pero pocas pueden presumir de ser tanto de denuncia como esta.
